Hello, Rockets!
Including today, only eight more days of school left.  Are you ready? We have had a great school year! It will be sad to see these students leave on Thursday, June 2nd. I have enjoyed getting to know them and the entire District 12 community.  Now I know what all the fuss is about!
Since the first day of school, we have been taking a close look at the way we do things at Ringwood School.  With new eyes, we have constantly asked, “Why are we doing it that way?”  Usually, the answer has been, “Because that is the best way!”  But sometimes the answer has been, “Because that is the way we have always done it!”  I don’t know about you, but I am not a fan of that answer.  You might see some changes as early as the beginning of next year.  My hope is that they are changes that are welcome and that help in some way.  We will keep you posted as the summer continues.  Please keep your eyes on Facebook, Twitter and your email inbox.
Thanks.

Dear, Ringwood School Parents,
This is your 13 day warning.  There isn’t much on the calendar this week, but it won’t last.  Next week we are packed!  I hope you are keeping an eye on Facebook or Twitter.  Lots of great information finds its way on to our social media sites, so please, take a moment to like the District 12 Facebook page or follow District 12.

I also wanted to mention that in July, if you have a current District 12 student, you will be asked to register that child for the following year.  During that time, please take a close look at your contact information.  Specifically, look at your primary phone number.  Not too many years ago, this was typically your landline or home phone.  I would ask that you reconsider this.  Please list your primary phone number as the number with which we would have the best chance of contacting you.  For many of us, that is no longer our home phone.  Thank you for your help.

As always, let me know if you have any questions.

Hello, Ringwood School Families!

My last few weekly letters have been a little lengthy so I will try to keep this one brief.  We are celebrating “The Week of the Young Child” this week so please send in your cereal donations.  We look forward to seeing many of you at our parade on Friday, April 29th at 2:30.  We will be walking from the corner of School Road and Barnard Mill Road to the northernmost driveway into the school parking lot.  It is not a very long parade, but with the little legs that are walking, it is just long enough!

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Hello, Rockets!
WOW!!!!!  What a great weekend!  If not for the Blackhawks loss on Sunday, I would have said it was a perfect weekend!
You might not know it, but the upcoming week is a big week at Ringwood School!  Why?  I am very glad you asked!  The staff at Ringwood School has been waiting for this week all year.  It is the week we implement our Positive Behavior System (PBS).  We have named our system, Great Behavior…We Rock-it!
We have great students at Ringwood School.  These great students often demonstrate great behavior.  We would like to reward that great behavior.  We have a plan to do just that, while at the same time, addressing the fact that at times, we all make mistakes and poor choices or unexpected behaviors.  Please bare with me as I try to explain what this system is going to look like.  I know this is a long email and, as a father of four, I try to avoid long emails, but it is the only way to get all of the information out to you.  I apologize in advance.
First off, on Wednesday, all of our students are going to take a turn to travel around the school and learn what is expected of them in all of the different areas of the school.  They will visit the gym, the lunchroom, the playground, etc.  The staff has spent the better part of the year making our behavior matrix, which is basically a list of the behaviors we expect at each location.  I will include the matrix with this email.  The fact that this has taken so long is why we are doing it now.  Our thought was, if we implement PBS in the fourth quarter, it will give our students a taste of it, so when we begin the school year with this system in the fall, it won’t be entirely unfamiliar.
A vital part of PBS is the acknowledgment of all of the positive behavior over the course of the quarter.  Therefore, at the end of each quarter, we will have a Positive Behavior assembly.  All of the students that consistently demonstrate positive behavior will not only be invited to the assembly, but they will have a chance to be part of the assembly.  Since our students are so young, we thought we would have a Positive Behavior assembly at the onset of implementation so the students will know what to expect.  All students will be invited to this assembly and will have the potential of participating.  The assembly will include six “Minute to Win It” games.  Our students will get to participate in these games if their names are randomly picked out of a bag.  At the end of the 4th quarter, we will hold another Positive Behavior assembly.  However, at this assembly, students who have received a “major” behavior referral or three “minor” behavior referrals, will spend the assembly reviewing the behavior matrix and discussing ways to become a part of the assembly the next time around.  Students that have two “minor” behavior referrals will be invited to the assembly, but will not be able to participate.
Speaking of referrals, our staff will be writing referrals for behaviors that conflict with the behavior matrix.  If your child receives a referral, please read it and review it with your child.  Once this is done, please sign it and send it back to school.  If you have a question about the referral, please feel free to contact the staff member that filled it out or me.  All “major” behavior referrals will come from me.
I welcome your questions or your comments.
Along with the behavior matrix, I am attaching a PBS informational page.  All of these documents, plus more can be found on the Ringwood School website.  Click here to be taken to that page.

Hello, Ringwood School Families!
I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend.  Any day now we should begin to see spring arrive!  Our students, staff (and principal) are anxiously awaiting for that day to come!
We have many wonderful things coming up in the very near future.  For starters, this week starts off our spring reading program called Rocketing into Reading!  This program begins on Monday, April 11th and ends on Monday, April 25th.   Mrs. Pitzen challenges our students to read 3,000 books.  They will attempt to rocket from the edge of the solar system all the way to the sun!  Good luck, Rockets!
Last week I sent an email out to all parents inviting you to fill out a parent input form if you had academic or socio-emotional information or concerns about your child.  If your child’s teacher is already aware of these concerns, filling out the form is not necessary.
If you have not yet liked the District 12 Facebook page, please do so soon.  All four schools are adding more to Facebook and Twitter each day.  You are missing fun pictures, helpful information and the cutest Ringwood School students!  Hope to see you on Facebook soon!
